A Man for All Seasons

When Henry VIII (Robert Shaw) seeks approval from the English aristocracy to divorce his wife and marry commoner Anne Boleyn, Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield) finds himself caught between a murderous king and the powerful Roman Catholic Church. Richly crafted with a fine supporting cast, director Fred Zinnemann's period drama swept the 1966 Oscars, winning six golden statuettes, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director.

Flashdance

All the President's Men

The film that launched a thousand journalism school students, All the President's Men chronicles how the work of reporters Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) contributed to the public downfall of President Richard M. Nixon. The duo connected a Washington, D.C., hotel break-in with a Nixon "dirty tricks" team assigned to discredit Democratic rivals, launching a series of tense events that forced Nixon to resign.

Amistad

Steven Spielberg directed this story about the 1839 revolt aboard Spanish slave ship La Amistad and the uprising's tragic aftermath. An African-born slave (Djimon Hounsou) leads a mutiny against his brutal captors. Because the ship is in American waters, a U.S. court must decide the slaves' fate. In an eloquent courtroom speech, ex-president John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) argues for the Africans' freedom.

My Left Foot: Special Edition

Daniel Day-Lewis won an Oscar for his emotionally and physically complex portrayal of Irish writer Christy Brown, who was born with cerebral palsy and misdiagnosed as mentally disabled for the first 10 years of his life. The story unfolds in a series of flashbacks with Hugh O'Conor starring as the young Christy, who eventually learned to write using the only body part he could control: his left foot.

Indecent Proposal

Talk about expensive dates! Billionaire Robert Redford pays for a doozy when, for a cool $1 million, he proposes to a very married Demi Moore that they spend a single night together. Moore's husband (Woody Harrelson) is a cash-strapped, down-on-his-luck architect who could use the dough to keep their beach house from defaulting to the bank. Will she, or won't she?

...And Justice for All

America's justice system comes under indictment in director Norman Jewison's trenchant film starring Al Pacino as upstanding attorney Arthur Kirkland. A hard-line -- and tainted -- judge (John Forsythe) stands accused of rape, and Kirkland (Al Pacino) has to defend him. Kirkland has a history with the judge, who jailed one of the lawyer's clients on a technicality. When the judge confesses his guilt, Kirkland faces an ethical and legal quandary.

Coming Home

While her husband is in Vietnam, Sally Hyde (Jane Fonda) volunteers at a veteran's clinic, where she encounters embittered paraplegic Luke Martin (Jon Voight). Sally begins to feel progressively disconnected from her spouse and embarks on an emotional and physical affair with Luke. True Crime

Young Mary Gordano (Alicia Silverstone) spends her days poring over detective magazines, fascinated by the world of criminal investigation. A Time to Kill

When two white men brutally rape a young black girl in a small Mississippi town, the child's vengeful father (Samuel L. Jackson) fears their acquittal and takes the law into his own hands. But as his trial date approaches, all hell breaks loose. Aided by lawyer Jake Brigance (Matthew McConaughey) and his spunky legal assistant (Sandra Bullock), the father fights to stay out of prison and salve his daughter's terrible memories.

Network: Special Edition

Paddy Chayefsky predicted today's rash of trash television and shock-laden news broadcasts. The writer of Marty created network news anchor Howard Beale (Peter Finch), who loses his mind on the air. Unfortunately, his outrageous rants boost the ratings and intrigue cutthroat network executives Faye Dunaway and Robert Duvall. William Holden contrasts their avarice as an old-school TV journalist hopelessly out of step.

Absence of Malice

Journalistic ethics come under fire in this newspaper drama written by former reporter Kurt Luedtke. Sally Fields plays a novice reporter at a Miami daily who becomes a pawn in the investigation of a liquor distributor (Paul Newman) suspected of being involved in a mob murder. Tragedy, scandal and cover-up follow. The film received Oscar nominations for Best Actor (Newman), Best Supporting Actress (Melinda Dillon) and Best Screenplay.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia attorney Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks, in an Oscar-winning role) launches a wrongful termination suit against the hand that feeds him when his law firm finds out about his HIV-positive status -- and his homosexuality -- and fires him. Denzel Washington co-stars as a homophobic lawyer who reluctantly agrees to take Andy's case in this Jonathan Demme-directed film, the first major-studio picture to tackle the topic of AIDS.

The China Syndrome

TV reporter Kimberly Wells (Jane Fonda) yearns to do hard news and suddenly gets her wish while she and cameraman Richard Adams (Michael Douglas) are covering a routine story at the local nuclear plant. As they're escorted through the power station, they observe (and covertly film) a near-meltdown. Working with a whistleblower (Jack Lemmon), Wells and Adams try to get the truth out, but corporate interests behind the scenes have other ideas. …

Nuts

A high-class call girl (Barbra Streisand) kills a customer in self-defense. To avoid an embarrassing scandal, her parents attempt to have her declared mentally incompetent. She has difficulty pulling it together to prove herself sane, though: She constantly disrupts the courtroom, and she trusts no one, not even her court-appointed attorney (Richard Dreyfuss).

Wall Street

Enterprising stockbroker Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) falls under the enticing spell of Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas), an unabashedly greedy Wall Street arbitrageur. Gekko takes Fox under his wing, tutoring his charge in the unscrupulous tactics that put the corporate raider on top. But when Gekko embroils his protégé in an insider-trading scheme that may risk the jobs of kith and kin, Fox develops a conscience and decides to turn the tables.

Silkwood

While working at an Oklahoma nuclear power plant, Karen Silkwood (Meryl Streep) becomes exposed to radiation. When the official investigation is tampered with, Karen conducts her own inquiry … but she disappears under suspicious circumstances before its completion. Kurt Russell costars in this fact-based drama, which was nominated for multiple Oscars and earned Cher a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe for her minimalist performance.

The Verdict

A washed-up, ambulance-chasing attorney (Paul Newman) gets a chance at redemption when his friend (Jack Warden) tosses him an open-and-shut medical malpractice case. But instead of accepting an easy cash settlement, he takes the powerful defendant to court. James Mason plays the opposing counsel, whom his legal adversary calls "The Prince of Darkness," in this courtroom drama from director Sidney Lumet.

Phenomenon

Humble mechanic George Malley (John Travolta) is celebrating his birthday at a local pub when he observes a bright light outside. Knocked unconscious, he awakens with incredible intellectual powers that soon draw the attention of curious scientists and the FBI. Supportive pals Nate (Forest Whitaker) and Doc (Robert Duvall) stand by George when their small community is thrown off-kilter by his transformation in this heartwarming supernatural tale.

Driving Miss Daisy

This four-time Academy Award-winning story based on Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning play chronicles the unlikely bond between a genteel but strong-willed Southern matron (Jessica Tandy) and her good-natured African-American chauffeur (Morgan Freeman). It's a contest of wills as they learn how much they have in common, despite their obvious differences. The bumpy road they travel ultimately leads to the friendship of a lifetime.

Apocalypse Now

The horror, the horror. Francis Ford Coppola disappeared into the Philippine jungle and emerged 2 years later with this film, possibly his greatest work. Based on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, the story follows Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) as he journeys upriver in search of the mysterious -- and completely insane -- Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando). His mission: terminate Kurtz -- "with extreme prejudice."

JFK: Special Edition

Oliver Stone's fascinating film about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy -- one of America's most enigmatic and mythical political figures -- is even more dramatic thanks to the extra footage included in this special edition. When Kennedy is killed while visiting Dallas, a lone gunman named Lee Harvey Oswald (Gary Oldman) takes the fall. But was he acting alone, or was he part of a larger conspiracy?

The Rainmaker

Dangerous Liaisons

Director Roger Vadim takes Choderlos de Laclos' 18th-century novel about sex and seduction and transplants it to a pre-1960s Paris where jazz clubs and sexual permissiveness are the order of the day. Jeanne Moreau and Gérard Philipe play a jaded couple who entertain themselves by dallying with others, and Annette Vadim portrays the virtuous Marianne Tourvel, whose reputation the duo is intent on destroying.

Rain Man

Fast-talking yuppie Charlie Babbitt is forced to slow down when he meets a brother he never knew he had, an autistic savant named Raymond (Dustin Hoffman, in an Oscar-winning role) who's spent most of his life in an institution. Training Day
