Beneath the 12-Mile Reef

The Passion of Joan of Arc

Considered director Carl Theodor Dreyer's finest achievement and one of the greatest movies of all time, this stunning emotional drama recounts the events surrounding Joan of Arc's 1431 heresy trial, burning at the stake and subsequent martyrdom. The film's original version, thought to have been lost to fire, was miraculously found in perfect condition in 1981. Maria Falconetti turns in a haunting performance as the young French saint.

The Goonies

A group of misfit, small-town children discovers a pirate-treasure map and embarks on a journey to find the riches in this beloved 1980s classic. Un Chien Andalou

Artist Salvador Dali and novice (at the time) director Luis Buñuel came together to craft this unique film consisting of a jarring collage of absurd and deplorable images aimed at raising more than a few eyebrows. Images include a razor slicing a woman's eye, a man hauling a giant piano, ants circling a hole in a man's hand and more, including assorted detached body parts and futile murders. Originally a silent film, a score was later added.

Pandora's Box

G.W. Pabst's visually striking silent melodrama examines the plight of Lulu (Louise Brooks), a mesmerizing woman whose uninhibited sexuality leads to her downfall. After marrying her wealthy lover, Dr. Schon (Fritz Kortner), Lulu inadvertently shoots him during a struggle. She's convicted of murder but escapes with Schon's lovestruck son (Francis Lederer). Soon, their circumstances spiral downward, with tragic results.

Playtime

The celebrated Jacques Tati directs and stars in this brilliantly eccentric ode to humanity. Tati plays Monsieur Hulot, a Parisian who's befuddled by the changes he witnesses in his beloved city, which has grown increasingly touristy. As Hulot roams the uncomfortably modern Paris with a group of American tourists, his story epitomizes the struggle of modern man to maintain a soul in the face of an impersonal world.

Grass

Narrated by actor and pot activist Woody Harrelson, this slick and snappy documentary chronicles the history of marijuana use and prohibition from the early 1900s through modern day. Biased toward legalization in tone, the clever if subjective film reveals the absurdity of government anti-grass tactics. Comic Tommy Chong also lends his voice to this informative and amusing illustration of how one substance among many has created such a clamor.

Gulliver's Travels

Ted Danson stars as Dr. Gulliver in this made-for-TV miniseries that faithfully adapts Jonathan Swift's classic 18th century satirical tale. Gulliver's story is told in flashback after he returns from years of travel to find that another doctor (James Fox) has his eye on his practice -- and on his wife (Mary Steenburgen)! To make matters worse, Gulliver is sent to an insane asylum after sharing his tales of strange and distant lands.

The Family Man

In this modern-day riff on Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life, cutthroat investment banker Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage), who eschews emotional ties, is transported into the prosaic life he might have had if he'd wed his college sweetheart (Téa Leoni). Instead of a Ferrari, Campbell drives a malfunctioning minivan in the suburbs and is saddled with two screaming kids -- but he learns to love every minute of it.

Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport

Filmmaker Mark Jonathan Harris's Oscar-winning documentary tells the story of an underground railroad -- the Kindertransport -- that saved the lives of more than 10,000 Jewish children at the dawn of World War II. Through interviews and archival footage, the survivors movingly recount being taken from their families and sent to live with strangers in the relative safety of England. Judi Dench narrates.

Touch of Evil

Osmosis Jones

Gross-out kings Peter and Bobby Farrelly outdo themselves with this addled (and partially animated) tale about an out-of-shape, 40-year-old man (Bill Murray) who's the host to various organisms, tissues and blood cells all trying to do their assigned tasks. Chris Rock provides the voice for Osmosis Jones, a daffy white blood cell who tries to police Murray's body. Trippy is not the word for this film!

Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles: The Pluto Campaign

Five original episodes from the "Roughnecks" animated television series put a space-age twist on World War II battle adventures. Produced by Starship Troopers director Paul Verhoeven, these part-sequel, part-remake stories detail the Marines's battles and assignments leading up to the film's climactic assault on Bug City. Vocal talent includes E.G. Daily of "Rugrats" fame and Dom DeLuise's son, David.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Two American showgirls in the mood for love board a luxury liner to Paris. Engaged to be married, fair-haired Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe) is unknowingly tracked by a private investigator who was hired by her future father-in-law. But the detective only has eyes for her brunette friend, Dorothy (Jane Russell). Based on the Broadway musical starring Carol Channing, the film features the memorable tune "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend."

An American Tail

Already a classic, this 1986 animated adventure begins in Russia, where a young mouse named Fievel (voiced by Phillip Glasser) and his family decide to migrate to America, a "land without cats," at the turn of the 20th century. But somehow, Fievel ends up in the New World alone and must fend off not only the felines he never thought he'd have to deal with again but also the loneliness of being away from home.

Battleground

Director William Wellman dedicated this taut war film to "the battered bastards of Bastogne." The film tells the story of a U.S. Army division that's overrun by the Germans during the early hours of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. James Whitmore, who shines as a grizzled sergeant, leads a great cast (James Arness, Van Johnson, Ricardo Montalban and John Hodiak). The movie won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Best Friends

Richard Babson (Burt Reynolds) and Paula McCullen (Goldie Hawn) have lived and worked together as a seamless screenwriting team for five years. But trouble starts to brew after they finally tie the knot. What they hadn't counted on were all the family dynamics that crop up the minute they decide to "make it legal." Fanny and Alexander

Director Ingmar Bergman's autobiographical drama, the 1984 Best Foreign Film Oscar winner, depicts a family in crisis after its lively patriarch (Allan Edwall) dies unexpectedly, leaving his grieving wife (Ewa Froling) desperate to provide stability for her children. The widow marries a minister, but their new life proves to be foreboding and lonesome, so it's up to the children's grandmother (Gunn Wallgren) to infuse joy into their existence.

Flying Down to Rio

In this high-flying musical comedy, a love triangle unfolds around a sensuous Brazilian beauty (Dolores del Rio), an ace bandleader (Gene Raymond) and his friend (Raul Roulien). But romantic intrigue aside, it's Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers who steal the show in their first on-screen pairing. Produced by Merian C. Cooper, the film features aerial stunts and some elaborate in-flight choreography, as well as the Oscar-nominated song "Carioca."

Innerspace

A hell-raising Navy test pilot (Dennis Quaid) is miniaturized for a top-secret exploratory journey inside a laboratory rabbit -- but is instead injected into the body of a high-strung nebbish (Martin Short) who works as a supermarket clerk. Co-starring Meg Ryan, Innerspace is like The Fantastic Voyage with a laugh track. Short's twitchy physical comedy is a marvel to behold.

King Rat

Based on the novel by James Clavell, King Rat deals with a group of allied prisoners incarcerated in the infamous Japanese-run Changi POW camp in Singapore during World War II. In the camp, an American corporal (George Segal) with a genius for hustling does whatever he can -- including bribing guards -- to live as comfortably as possible, even at the expense of his fellow prisoners. Tom Courtenay, Patrick O'Neal and James Fox co-star.

Love Me or Leave Me

Nightclub singer Ruth Etting (Doris Day) tries to keep her secret romance with a musician under wraps in this dramatic musical based on the life story of the 1930s singer. Etting is controlled by Martin "The Gimp" Snyder (James Cagney), who builds a nightclub and makes Etting its star. Snyder catches Etting with musician Johnny (Cameron Mitchell) and goes to prison for trying to kill him, leaving Ruth to continue performing in Snyder's nightclub.

Richard III

Laurence Olivier, as England's storied ruling monarch, gives one of his best performances in what may be Shakespeare's greatest historical drama. In a Machiavellian masterstroke, Richard III plays relatives against each other and ascends to the throne amid the War of the Roses. But things start to go bad when he murders two young princes he'd imprisoned in the infamous Tower of London. Co-stars Cedric Hardwicke, John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson.

Skippy

Brought touchingly to life thanks to the gentle direction of Norman Taurog (who took home an Academy Award for his work), this 1931 gem stars Jackie Cooper as the titular Skippy. Turning a deaf ear to his martinet father, Skippy heads to the other side of the tracks, where he becomes fast friends with Sooky Wayne (Robert Coogan). The boys run into a heap o' trouble, however, when they cross paths with a vindictive dogcatcher (Jack Clifford).

The Adventures of Don Juan

Famed swashbuckler Don Juan (Errol Flynn) spends all of his time pursuing young ladies and dueling with their jealous husbands. To keep him under control, Spain's Queen Margaret (Viveca Lindfors) appoints him head of the royal fencing academy. When the devious Duke de Lorca (Robert Douglas) plots to overthrow the queen, Don Juan and his students come to her rescue in this 17th-century adventure, which won an Oscar for Costume Design.

The Battle of Algiers

One of the most influential films in the history of political cinema, Gillo Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers focuses on the events of 1957, a key year in Algeria's struggle for independence from France. Shot in the streets of Algiers in documentary style, the film vividly re-creates the tumultuous Algerian uprising against the occupying French. The violence soon escalates on both sides in this war drama that's still astonishingly relevant.

The Earrings of Madame de...

When General Andre de's (Charles Boyer) wife, Louisa (Danielle Darrieux), decides to secretly sell the diamond earrings he gave her on their wedding day to pay off a troubling debt, she inadvertently sets off a chain of events that results in a whirlwind affair with an Italian baron (Vittorio De Sica). Gloomy Sunday

A romantic melodrama set in 1930s Budapest, Gloomy Sunday centers on a love triangle with tragic consequences. Restaurant owner Laszlo hires pianist András to play in his restaurant. Dilbert: Season 2

From office picnics to off-site meetings, cubicle real estate to storefront HMOs, no subject goes unmocked in Season 2 of the animated series depicting the struggles of Dilbert the engineer (voiced by Daniel Stern) versus the corporate world. Dilbert does the bidding of his boss (Larry Miller) while giving him the runaround but invariably is snagged in his own schemes; only intellectually superior canine Dogbert (Chris Elliott) can bail him out.

Heavy Gear: Season 1

Set on the futuristic planet of Terra Nova, this fluidly animated series centers on two polar forces -- the Vanguard of Justice and the Shadow Dragons -- that are locked in mechanized combat for world control. Deploying armies of Heavy Gears -- towering humanoid machines fitted with transformable weaponry -- the Vanguard faces off against the Dragons and hotshot pilot Marcus Rover (voiced by Lukas Haas) in a spate of strategy-testing tournaments.

Heavy Gear: Season 2

On the distant planet of Terra Nova, the world war between the northern Vanguard of Justice and the southern Shadow Dragons escalates, with the clash of opposing Heavy Gear forces moving out of the arena and into the wild. Design enhancement of the robotic combat vehicles is the name of the game in Season 2 of the animated series, and Dragons leader Marcus Rover (voice of Lukas Haas) gives his squad the edge as his tactical instincts come to the fore.

Bloodknot

When her soldier son dies in a terrible accident, mother Evelyn Reaves (Margot Kidder) and her remaining children assuage their grief by opening their arms to Kaye (Kate Vernon), an enigmatic woman claiming to be the dead man's girlfriend. But the manipulative imposter's lethal intentions soon come to light as she lays bare Evelyn's own dark secrets. Patrick Dempsey also stars in this sexually charged thriller from director Jorge Montesi.

Free of Eden

After a robbery in the fast-food joint where she works turns lethal, high school dropout Nicole Turner (Sydney Tamiia Poitier) finds a seed of hope in the rousing eulogy delivered by Will Cleamons (Sidney Poitier), a rich businessman who grew up in her rough-and-tumble neighborhood. Forming a tight mentor-mentee bond, Cleamons and Turner both discover renewed purpose for their lives. Leon Ichaso directs this drama that co-stars Phylicia Rashad.

Universal Soldier III: Unfinished Business

Still on the run from government agents, reanimated warrior Luc Devereaux (Matt Battaglia) and reporter Veronica Roberts (Chandra West) escape to Toronto, where they hope to use Canadian television to expose the corrupt Universal Soldier program. But a CIA deputy director (Burt Reynolds) has a new trick up his sleeve -- cloning new UniSols to hunt down the rogue pair. Jeff Woolnough directs this sequel to Universal Soldier II: Brothers in Arms.

Peanuts Summertime Specials

America's favorite pastime turns into endless grief for Charlie Brown in this trio of vintage specials that depicts the Peanuts gang's struggles not so much to win a game as merely to even the score. No team uniforms, a ban on girls and dogs, mutiny by his players -- such are the troubles that befall Charlie, not to mention a summer camp where the girls take every prize. But when the Masked Marvel appears, redemption is only an arm wrestle away.

Animaniacs: Wakko's Wish

The impish Animaniacs embark on a medieval adventure of ridiculous proportions in this feature-length cartoon, which finds Wakko (voiced by Jess Harnell) wishing on a fallen star to help an ailing Dot (Tress MacNeille) pay for an important operation. But the quest is hardly easy given the machinations of villainous tax collector Baron von Plotz (Frank Welker), who's determined to keep Wakko from reaching his destination.

Tales of the Black Freighter

This animated short -- based on the story-within-a-story in the graphic novel Watchmen -- follows a shipwrecked sailor as he endures ghastly horrors to get home and protect his family from an attack by the evil pirate vessel Black Freighter. But as he sails a raft made from the bloated corpses of his former crew, the young mariner descends into delusion, madness and worse. Gerard Butler narrates this companion to 2009's live-action film Watchmen.

Under the Hood

Fans of the graphic novel Watchmen are in for a treat with this live-action short that expands the alternate-reality mythos through a (faux) interview with Hollis Mason (Stephen McHattie), aka the original Nite Owl, who dishes on his superhero origins. Styled as a TV show promoting Mason's book Under the Hood, the pseudo-documentary also finds Silk Spectre (Carla Gugino) and other Watchmen characters reminiscing about their early careers.

Bud Abbott & Lou Costello in Hollywood

Enterprising barber Buzz Kurtis (Bud Abbott) and his clumsy sidekick Abercrombie (Lou Costello) give up their Hollywood shave-and-shine business after meeting slick movie agent Royce (Warner Anderson). Their first client is a newly arrived would-be singer named Jeff (Bob Haymes). They succeed in getting Jeff cast in a major film and he falls in love with the leading lady, but another actor interferes, leaving Jeff's new friends in a pickle.

Greased Lightning

Richard Pryor gives a critically acclaimed performance as real-life driver Wendell Scott in this action comedy about the first black competitor to break the color barrier in the stock-car racing circuit after World War II. Aided by his Southern friend Hutch (Beau Bridges), Wendell drives fast and furious, determined not to let racism slow him down. Along the way, Wendell is supported by his lovely wife (Pam Grier). Cleavon Little co-stars.

The Big Store

Groucho, Harpo and Chico bring the funny in this Marx brothers classic, which finds a department-store dowager (Margaret Dumont) hiring gasbag private eye Wolf J. Flywheel (Groucho Marx) to protect her nephew (Tony Martin) from the store's disgruntled, thieving manager (Douglass Dumbrille). Soon Flywheel and his compatriots are creating havoc all over the store in this slapstick extravaganza directed by Charles Riesner.

Eric Idle Exploits Monty Python

You'll get an insider's perspective on the fiendishly irreverent comedy troupe Monty Python with this entertaining entry from Eric Idle, one of the group's founding members and composer of its most memorable comic songs. Besides performing classic sketches such as "The Argument Clinic" and singing iconic Python tunes including "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," Idle reflects on his career during and after Monty Python's halcyon days.

Frontline: A Death in Tehran

PBS's influential documentary series "Frontline" tackles a heartrending subject in this exploration of the death of Neda Agha Soltan, an Iranian woman killed while watching a protest of the controversial 2009 Iranian presidential election. Soltan's death was filmed on a camera phone and uploaded to the Internet, documenting the extent of the political turmoil in Iran and how new methods of communication are changing the way news is reported.

Frontline: The Card Game

PBS's award-winning investigative series "Frontline" examines how the banking and credit industries are reacting to new regulations guiding how Americans obtain the credit that so frequently turns out to be a curse rather than a blessing. How can credit card companies position themselves to continue making massive profits while encouraging fiscal responsibility and a stable U.S. economy? Politicians, lobbyists and consumer advocates respond.

All Ages Night

When things get tough in London, Dylan (Django Stewart) heads for Southern California. There he meets Holly (Katherine Carlsberg), who's just back from rehab, and the two quickly form a close bond. Meanwhile, Dylan joins a band -- and an upcoming performance may change everyone's lives. Billy Evans, Jarron Vosburg, Christie Herring and Grant Show co-star in this indie teen drama about love, life and music.

The China Lake Murders

When the small desert community of China Lake is rocked by a series of seemingly random murders, Sheriff Sam Brodie (Tom Skerritt) turns to Officer Donnelly (Michael Parks) -- a big-city cop on vacation in town -- for help with the investigation. But as the slayings become more twisted, Brodie begins to wonder if Donnelly knows more than he's letting on. Alan Metzger directs this intense made-for-TV thriller that also stars Nancy Everhard.

The Choirboys

Burned-out from the crushing stress of patrolling the rough streets of Los Angeles, a group of LAPD cops blows off steam at nightly "choir practices" -- parties fueled by practical jokes, booze and debauchery. But when a joke goes too far and an innocent man gets caught in the crossfire, the cops close ranks and try to cover up the incident. Charles Durning, James Woods, Randy Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr. star in this dark comedy.

Foreign Student

In 1955, idealistic college student Philippe (Marco Hofschneider) travels from Paris to Virginia on a scholarship and encounters an entirely new world of American football, jazz, romance -- and violent racial prejudice. Philippe doesn't understand why his well-meaning new friends advise him not to pursue April (Robin Givens), an African American woman, and he begins to fall in love with her despite the dangers.

Renegades of the Rio Grande

Texas Rangers Cal Benedict (Eddie Dew) and Trigger Bidwell (Fuzzy Knight) witness the murder of a man and the abduction of his brother, Buck (Rod Cameron), by a treacherous gang of bank robbers. After freeing Buck, the rangers track him to the ranch where the loot is buried. But the lawmen are a bit suspicious that Buck may be in league with the robbers. Can Buck prove his innocence and win the love of Dolores (Jennifer Holt), the ranch's owner?

Scott Joplin

Brilliant African American composer Scott Joplin (Billy Dee Williams) fights against racism to break into the music business at the end of the 19th century, finally achieving success with a novel ragtime tune called "The Maple Leaf Rag." As ragtime becomes wildly popular, Joplin gains fame and fortune but longs to create a masterwork in a "respectable" genre. Clifton Davis and Art Carney co-star in this biographical drama.

Cheyenne: Season 2

The hit Western's second season finds former U.S. Army scout Cheyenne Bodie (Clint Walker) still wandering the frontier facing dangers galore, including confronting a gang that's been terrorizing the citizens of a small town. Also this year, Cheyenne works as a sheriff, helps a newspaperman stand up to a devious crook and rounds up some cattle rustlers. Guest stars include Dennis Hopper, John Carradine, Angie Dickinson and James Garner.

Cheyenne: Season 4

Brawny Cheyenne Bodie (Clint Walker) continues rambling across the frontier, picking up odd jobs from cattle driving to catching criminals in the fourth season of this classic 1950s Western series set in the post-Civil War era. In a special two-part episode, Cheyenne finds himself involved in the events leading up to the infamous Little Bighorn massacre. Guest stars this season include Connie Stevens, George Kennedy and Lorne Greene.

Cheyenne: Season 5

After being out of commission for a year during contract talks, Clint Walker returns for the fifth season of this hit Western, reprising the role of Cheyenne Bodie -- a strapping jack-of-all-trades roaming the Wild West in search of adventure. Between guarding shipments of gold and confronting outlaws, Bodie finds time to help Billy the Kid rescue a woman in danger. Look for guest appearances by Jack Elam, Alan Hale Jr. and Dawn Wells.

Cheyenne: Season 6

In this popular TV Western's sixth season, Cheyenne Bodie (Clint Walker) continues riding the range, using his brawn and his background as a former Army scout to pick up work, aid those in need and battle the black hats. This year, Cheyenne helps head off a posse bent on lynching an innocent man, takes on a pair of gunfighting brothers and learns that his father may be alive. James Coburn and Lee Van Cleef make guest appearances.

Cheyenne: Season 7

Footloose ex-Army scout and freelance adventurer Cheyenne Bodie (Clint Walker) takes on some of his biggest challenges yet in the final season of this long-running TV Western, including joining the state Senate and spearheading an effort to limit buffalo hunting. Cheyenne also tracks a mysterious killer and faces trumped-up charges of murder himself. Watch for guest spots by James Coburn, Denver Pyle and Ellen Burstyn.

Martin Chuzzlewit

A sharp critique of greed and wealth in Victorian England, this Emmy-nominated production of the Charles Dickens classic stars Paul Scofield as Martin Chuzzlewit, a rich old man whose family covets -- and plots to inherit -- his money. But with no deserving relatives, to whom will Martin leave his enormous fortune? Pete Postlethwaite, Tom Wilkinson and John Mills round out the stellar ensemble cast.
