District B13: Ultimatum

<a href="http://www.netflix.com/Movie/District_B13_Ultimatum/70114015"><img src="http://cdn-0.nflximg.com/us/boxshots/small/70114015.jpg"/></a><br>A very poor sequel to the original District B13. There are only a few good action sequences (C. Raffaelli has a nice fight scene while trying to protect a priceless work of art) and the Parkour scenes lack the quality and originality that made the first film so impressive. The two leads work well together but the remainder of the cast are uninspiring. A mediocre attempt at best, but if you lower your expectations a bit you just might enjoy it (2.5 stars).

<a href="http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Tunnel_Rats/70112364"><img src="http://cdn-0.nflximg.com/us/boxshots/small/70112364.jpg"/></a><br>One of the worst films I've seen in quite a long time. While technically proficient, the story is almost nonexistent. There is nothing deeper than than the Sgt. saying, "Platoon, we are going to explore this enemy tunnel system.". All the dialogue is trite and uninteresting, while the acting is average at best. I've read books on the tunnels in Vietnam and while it is quite an interesting concept to put to film, it still needs a real story with motivated characters to actually make it work. Uwe Boll clearly proves that he lacks the understanding of what a real story is. For an alternate view, the second episode of the Vietnam War TV show, Tour of Duty, takes place in tunnels. Although dated, produced in the late 1980s, at least it has a character driven story to it. Also, check out my top 10 list of High Caliber WAR FILMS Not to be Missed!

Miracle at St. Anna

<a href="http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Miracle_at_St._Anna/70101693"><img src="http://cdn-0.nflximg.com/us/boxshots/small/70101693.jpg"/></a><br>I like war films, just not this one. I enjoy some of Spike’s films but St. Anna is just an overlong, heavy handed mess. If you are a die hard Spike fan & never question his choices & feverishly love all his films, no matter the quality, then you'll probably stop reading this now & mark this review as unhelpful (be my guest, doesn't hurt me).*SPOILERS The actors (Luke, Miller, Cervi, Sciabordi) are actually quite good in this film, but the script is so weak in its characterizations it leaves them no room to showcase their abilities. The dialogue is trite and preachy beyond belief, all you get are thematic speeches which don't propel the storyline nor deepen the characters. After a while you just don't care about anyone & just tune out, especially since the film clocks in at over 2hrs46m. Also, the scenes with Leguizamo & Turturro are completely useless. If you are going to have quality actors in your film please do not regulate them to throwaway parts. Turturro's detective and Gordon-Levitt's reporter could have easily been combined into one character. Also, Leguizamo & the newspaper falling out the window was utterly contrived. The old man makeup for Negron was horrendous. Why not just get an older actor like in SPR? Also, the squad acts like they aren't in much danger as they lounge around the village. Seriously, why no posting of lookouts? And why wouldn't you just wait, crossing the river at night to safety? What soldier in his right mind would venture farther into enemy territory with absolutely no support? Does this film really show us an accurate African-American experience of WWII? Not likely, especially when it consists of just 4 men in a village behind enemy lines. Does it show us how blacks were deprived of civil rights at home & found people in Italy more accommodating? Yes, but when this theme is slapped onto a boring, contrived story it really isn’t that interesting. This is one Spike Lee film you can miss & probably never ever care that you did.

King Arthur

<a href="http://www.netflix.com/Movie/King_Arthur/60036234"><img src="http://cdn-0.nflximg.com/us/boxshots/small/60036234.jpg"/></a><br>A. Fuqua’s director’s cut of King Arthur is full of great action sequences and beautiful Irish scenery posing as the English countryside. However, the story was left behind by writer Franzoni (Gladiator) turning this film into a strictly B grade actioner. The romance subplot isn’t very exciting or involving, although Keira did her best and kept me somewhat interested. The romance subplot should have had more conflict; it could have been beefed up a bit, why not have Arthur and Lancelot fight over Guenivere? For all intents and purposes this is a new version of Arthur, why not spice it up? There are many fabulous actors in this film, to many to list in fact, but unfortunately they don’t have much to do except run around England wielding swords and battling Saxons and Woads. Skarsgĺrd is a great actor but unfortunately the antagonist he plays, Cerdic, is completely one dimensional consisting of yelling things like, “Kill everyone…” and “Hunt them down.”. I really couldn’t connect or feel for anyone, even the good guy “Samartian Knights”. The costumes, sets, and sound were clearly top notch but with a weak, uninvolving, straightforward storyline this film just can’t compare to solid films like “Braveheart”, “Rob Roy” etc. Overall, it’s a solid action picture full of wicked fights and picturesque vistas but if your looking for anything remotely deeper … you best find another King (2.95 stars).

<a href="http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Outsourced/70068703"><img src="http://cdn-0.nflximg.com/us/boxshots/small/70068703.jpg"/></a><br>Outsourced, available for instant viewing, is a light an airy romcom written by George Wing (50 First Dates). Josh Hamilton plays the lead, Todd Anderson, with little acting range while Ayesha Dharker is quite dynamic as his Indian co-worker. The story isn't anything new but with it set in India it has a fresh vibe to it that keeps you interested. The first third of the film starts off well and has some solid laughs. Outsourced, although good, could have been a gem of a film if the script was tighter in places and some relationships deepened. Overall though, this is a fun little film ideal for a Sunday afternoon (3.40 stars).

It feels like a comic book come to life. Director Louis Leterrier does well executing his task --the action is quite fierce and kinetic. The special effects are solid too along with the acting by Norton, Roth and Hurt. The beautiful Liv Tyler isn't very impressive, although she radiates truth, you don't get much from her character other than that of being the sexy heroine. When compared to Iron Man it was a bit of a let down, the story isn't as involving or complex but if you want to watch a solid action flick, rather than The Punisher or Max Payne, then The Hulk just might be for you. Bonus points for the amazing on location shots, especially of Brazil (plus BBJ expert Rickson Gracie), and some energetic scoring (listen to track #6, Favela Escape, by Craig Armstrong) on the soundtrack.

I really enjoy Will Ferrell and John C. Reily and you can tell they have a real friendship and repour. That being said this film is more like a series of SNL sketches than a cohesive comedy. All the actors did a great job and are clearly talented at improv but it bugs me that director McKay chose to have the actors play around so much and leave out the sometimes important character and plot development. The premise was actually pretty interesting, grown men playing grown men who still act like kids and don't want to well ...grow up. The language didn't bother me either, but the film eventually turned into rambling, screaming and noise. Overall, the storyline is weak at best with some funny parts a little too few and far between. Skip it unless your die hard Ferrell fans.

The fights were well choreographed and shot by action director Sammo Hung and director Gordon Chan. However, I disliked the overuse of wire work which Jackie normally didn't do earlier in his career. The other cast members (the stunning Forlani and funny Lee Evans) do well keeping the tone of the movie fairly comedic and light (although The Medallion does have the ability to raise people from the dead so it might not be suitable for younger audiences). All in all its a well put together film, a little lax in the story department (as expected in Chan films), but with only a few decent fights and an overuse of wire work this film garners only 2.5 stars.

The setup and the first thirty minutes are fairly funny but as the film continues on it starts to lose itself. Bateman is solid as a jerk of an ex while Peet, Logue and Grodin do okay during there screen time. Mia Farrow, Amy Poehler, Perry Reeves and Amy Adams are absolutely wasted during this film, none really serving a purpose. Overall, The Ex starts off well but the third act isn't very funny or polished and the plot turns sloppy. I'd take a pass on The Ex unless your an extreme Braff fan and enjoy his humor.

The story revolves around a lame ripoff attempt of Top Gun and 2001. The premise of an autonomous fighter plane could have been interesting but was left in the dust in favor or huge explosions and slick fighter plane action scenes. The visuals are fun, for the most part, but the script is full of weak characterizations --Josh Lucas was an outright bore while Jamie Foxx's talent was completely wasted in the cliche fighter jock role. The only saving grace from Stealth's deadly boredom was Jessica Beil in tight spandex and a bikini. This is a B grade action flick not worthy of a rental unless your up for utterly mindless fun (and once in a while you need it).

They're interesting to watch and propel this script into something better than it would have been with lesser actors. The film is slow moving at times and its plot line is quite coincidental at others allowing me to give it a passing grade of only 3 stars. Overall, Jordan sets a great tone and the actors deliver but I found the script too clichĂŠ to really recommend it. Rent it only if your Foster, Howard or Jordan fan.

Crowe turns in an understated performance with his short screen time as spook handler Ed Hoffman while DiCaprio does quite well as CIA operative Roger Ferris. I'm actually beginning to like DiCaprio more and more with each successive film he does. The best performance however was by an Andy Garcia look a like, Mark Strong, as Jordan intelligence minister Hani (could a best supporting actor nomination be in the works?) Although the story is full of gripping tension, I found the love subplot with the beautiful Golshifteh Farahani a bit too forced and cliche. It seemed like it was only added by writer Monahan to make an ending for the film (an ending that we've seen a million times). Overall though, Body of Lies is a all around solid action drama, a cross between Berg's "The Kingdom" and "Syriana". The production design by Arthur Max is flawless with spot on sound editing by Karen Baker and crew. If you're looking for a fairly realistic political actioner with a bit more depth than the Bourne Trilogy, don't look any farther. Also, of note is a new song by Guns N Roses that runs over the end credits called "If The World" (it's pretty good).

This tongue and cheek comedy won't leave you with much after all is said and done but sometimes it's not the destination, it's the funny arse journey. Overall though, this semi-dark, twisty and absurd comedy is full of bumbling characters, unexpected surprises and some burst out loud laughter. It's a bit on the vulgar side and quite violent at times, as only the Cohen brothers can do (a warning for the older, more refined crowd -think Grandpa Simpson), but for me the great cast delivers a lot of spot on laughter. This is a solid 3.95 stars, not a 4.0 because I don't think its anything I haven't seen before, nor does it have that "re-watchable" factor that some comedies and meaningful films have. You know the ones where every time you watch it you learn or see something new in them. Burn After Reading is like a sparkler, you only have so long to wave it around before it burns out, but oh how much freakin' fun you had whilst waving it!

It starts off well but drags a bit towards the end. David Cross plays a weird as hell giant blob type character and the ending isn't the greatest, somewhat of a let down. Overall I rate it about 3.5 stars, a bit better than Bender's Big Score because it has a few more laughs. If your a fan I'd check it out, otherwise take a pass. The bonus features are quite lackluster, skip them (I didn't listen to the commentary though, just the other material).

<a href="http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Redbelt/70097571"><img src="http://cdn-0.nflximg.com/us/boxshots/small/70097571.jpg"/></a><br>When I heard Mamet was scripting a new Ju-jitsu film I was all over it like white on rice. An Oscar nominated author writing a film involving the exciting world of MMA, what could be better? Well, apparently a lot of things.
First, let's start with the good, shall we?The Ju-Jitsu teacher Mike Terry, played by C. Ejiofor, is quite likeable, doing well along with the rest of the talented cast. Hey, I'm out of good things to say, now what?
First, the action scenes are pretty terrible. They are shot in medium close-ups leaving us no room to see the actor's bodies in action. All we see are strained faces struggling; they could have been stirring Jello for all I know.
Second, ALL the characters save the lead are woefully underdeveloped &amp; the plot is so hackneyed its an utter mess. Mamet has either gotten really lazy at the typewriter or else producing The Unit &amp; training in BJJ has taken up all of his time. I can take a fair amount of suspension of disbelief, we're at the movies after all, but when you have characters changing sides at the drop of a hat with no motive as to why, I get a little pissy. And seriously, do you have to cast your boring wife, Rebecca Pigeon, in every project you do?Talk about nepotism.
Finally, the film is too coincidental, predictable and unbelievable. Hey, let's start fighting in a vomitorium of a huge arena and have it not get broken up by the cops. That's believable. Perhaps Mamet is trying to say that these big arena promoters are putting on sporting events &amp; have left the origins &amp; philosophy of martial arts behind in the dust, exchanging honor for money? Sure. And maybe some of these fights are fixed just to create buzz and get people interested. Some probably are. But man, this is one lame film showing it.
Mamet, your story is just plain dull. I haven't be so disappointed after a film like this in a long time. This is a cliched piece of junk. Maybe Mamet should go back to writing for the stage.

The supporting actors shine too: a hilarious Steve Martin plays a new aged, hippie CEO, while Romany Malco gives us comedic relief as a doorman (mysteriously showing up in every nook and cranny of the building). This is a light comedy; it keeps a steady, upbeat vibe throughout. I would have preferred a bit more over the top goofiness and slapstick (in the vein of 40-Year-Old-Virgin or Wedding Crashers) but I have to assume that either the studio strong-armed the director to pull back on the raunchiness or that although Tina Fey is funny, she just doesn't really have that comedic sting that makes 30 Rock so spirited and edgy. The story moves fairly well, however it does get a bit tedious towards the end --you just want it to wrap itself up but your left waiting and waiting till the predictable ending shows up. This is a decent chick flick, like a strawberry topped Belgium waffle from IHOP thats light and airy but ultimately one you'll forget about the very next day.

I watched the thirteen episodes over the next few days and enjoyed the great overview they provided me of the war. Indeed, the last two episodes summarize all of the previous episodes and having just watched them all already I found the information quite redundant. Production values were very high; the sets are from a historic town in New England while the costumes look pristine bathed in elegant lighting. Obviously the budget ran thin during production as some footage is repeated as many as two and three times. This documentary might not cover every area of the war in extreme detail, a fair amount of battles in Canada and the South are absent, but it still gives you a nice broad picture of the war. Overall, I would rank this a solid documentary although not as in depth as others, such as the 1995 Charles Kuralt TV mini-series. This documentary serves as a great, modern produced, introduction for novices (such as high school students etc) who want to learn the facts of the Revolutionary War (3.90 stars).

What could be more exciting then leading a double life counting cards, winning thousands as a high roller, and returning to school during the week? Jim Sturgess does fairly well as a naive MIT student, while Fishburne provides a bit of fire playing loss prevention officer Cole Williams. Overall, the actors did their best but end up giving us one-dimensional performances (including Kevin Spacey &amp; Kate Bosworth) due to the script's lack of character depth. The script is all structure, paint by the numbers predictability--it moves fast but the characters are thin skeletons, dull stereotypes. 21 also deviates from its source, for instance there was another blackjack team from MIT that played in Vegas, as well as many weekend trysts with Vegas showgirls. What could have been an intriguing look at the dark underside of Vegas was turned into little more than a Disney inspired send off. If you were looking for a gritty story about gambling and girls in Vegas (like Casino, Leaving Las Vegas, The Cooler) it sure ain't here, 21 is a complete bust.

Along the way he meets many “characters” including Hal Holbrook, who does an exceedingly well job as a widowed, lonely old man while William Hurt and Jena Malone play Mr. and Mrs. McCandless to great effect, though the script doesn’t fully flesh out their characters. McCandless also meets the superb Catherine Keener and Brian H. Dierker who play such interesting vagabond hippies that I almost wanted the movie to be about them instead of McCandless. “Into the Wild” is purely a character driven journey film, not your typical Hollywood plot job. It is a wandering film that jumps between past and present multiple times, sometimes making it hard to follow. The beautiful vista view cinematography coupled with Eddie Vedder’s gravely voice on the film’s soundtrack are quite inspiring, although sometimes Penn’s use of Vedder is too prominent and distracting for my taste. This film is a fairly interesting journey with a great and noble theme, although I just wasn’t too thrilled about the road Penn chose to get there. What could have been a great film in my mind ended up as just average indie fair because McCandeless's journey just isn't that wild (or interesting).

Naomi Watts plays Anna, a British midwife in search of relatives for a newborn baby she's delivered. Viggo Mortensen plays a tattooed Nikolai, a driver for the Russian mob, with such subtle power he's downright scary. A dreary London is filmed in subdued tones and while the mysterious search unfolds Cronenberg creates an environment of tremendous suspense. The Russian mafia is a unique subject, and although quite violent at times, the choreographed brute force is always motivated and shocking as only Cronenberg can do. There is a dark, uneasy tenseness underneath Eastern Promises's crisp exterior. It's a surprising character driven ride if you're tough enough to endure. (3.9 stars)

A run of the mill television movie... the saving grace is that the actors do quite well, even Daniels as George Washington, although 99.9% of their dialogue is exposition. You can read about this entire battle in a book in less than fifteen minutes but the film does do a pretty nice job of portraying the events. Some minor historical details were left out, most noticeably: major hail and snow helped prevent the Continental Army from being spotted as they marched on Trenton, the Hessians counterattacked twice and then retreated into an apple orchard (not a tiny plow field the size of my garage), and American losses were not zero as stated in the film but estimated at 8 killed and 4 wounded. For my taste, the costumes were too clean for soldiers who had been fighting in desperate conditions and on the run for months (more like they had just arrived from the dry cleaners). Also, the music was clearly second-rate and completely noticeable in a bad way. If you're a Revolutionary War fan or high school student studying this era you might find this film interesting, otherwise I'd skip The Crossing and watch much more informative documentaries on the subject such as PBS's Liberty!: The American Revolution or The History Channel Presents: The Revolution.

Boy was I wrong. This film is similar to other films (Word Wars) where they follow a bunch of hardcore followers of some type of hobby, video game fanatics in this instance, who are on the verge of OCD as they battle it out till one is champ. Most of the addicts seem fairly normal, meaning they have jobs, but they definitely all need haircuts and a shave. Just because they started playing video games in the 80's doesn't mean they need to keep the same hairdo and wardrobe from that era. Overall, its an interesting character study of some smart, kindhearted oddballs... a little slow at times but fairly entertaining if you actually remember playing the original arcade games that spawned the modern day gaming industry (3.5 stars).

Although it has a fairly basic storyline (take the bad guy to the train) it has some great actors (even the bit parts), sets (they built a town from scratch), costumes and some roaring old shootouts. This film is more like Tombstone, Young Guns or Open Range --its sometimes not very realistic but it gives you what you came for -a good, old fashion, western ride full of bad guys, good guys and gunfights. If your looking for more than that, look elsewhere. (3.85 stars)

This is a pretty cool Italian detective flick similar in style to the television show "Miami Vice". With good action, nice DP work and some solid acting, this is an interestingly smooth cop drama. Although nothing really new is added to the time honored cop drama (as it was made in 2001), it is based on true events and the two disc set moves at a quick pace. All in all this is a solid, yet predictable piece, that is worth a rental sometime if your in the mood for tense Italian detective work. (3.5 stars)

Sure the guns look nice (and I really like guns!) but it's a supremely weak story, a villain that tries way too hard to be interesting scary, and many lame attempts at well, lame humor. To put it bluntly its like a bad American version of a John Woo HK flick. And if that's your thing, then by all means... The action and stunts are worth 4 stars but the script is a two starer, so in all fairness I'll average it out to barely 3 stars. Good day.

And then after those five minutes are up you say to yourself, "Okay, just five MORE minutes. This has got to get better?" --Well I did. Sunshine's good points are its special FX and production design, which are astoundingly beautiful, unfortunately the standard run of the mill spaceship in trouble story (that we've seen MANY times before) darkens my day (pun intended). All the characters seem too simple and sedate for my taste and even the main character Capa, played by C. Murphy, seems like he stepped out of a grunge band high on the chronic and into the role of the ship's physicist. To top it off the end of the film turns into such predicable fair that I almost wanted to stop watching. Its truly regrettable that you really don't get to know any of the characters in this film like you do in other ensemble casts (like the Alien, Star Trek or Star Wars franchises). Overall, there isn't anything in this film I haven't seen before (or anything new or creative for that matter besides the effects). Stick with Boyle's Trainspotting or 28 Days Later because Sunshine only rates 2.75 dull stars (get it, dull stars? d'oh).

It's pure over the top camp, with ludicrous violence and pointless T & A. From the first frame its so absurd its hard to take seriously. I mean a race were you hit people with your car to gain points?!? wtf?!? Nevertheless, there is something enduring about early Carradine and Stallone in super gay costumes, horrible futuristic sets, sped up car cashes and crap 70's music that make this film fun to watch. So in the end this may be cheesy and lame, but it sure is fun and utterly demented cheesy and lame. Watch for the remake in 2008 by crap writer and director Paul W.S. Anderson. at a quick pace. I was impressed with Ellen Page, who does quite well as Juno, an overly sarcastic teenager. Unfortunately, that's where all the goodness ends and the bad begins. First, Jennifer Garner is woefully miscast as a wanting mother and gives her character as much depth as my bathtub. Next, the funny as always Michael Cera is grossly underused and is relegated to a love story subplot. Finally, Juno's parents (J.K. Simmons, Allison Janney) are both extremely well played but unfortunately add little guidance to Juno's predicament.
Although I like the film's snappy dialogue, honestly, I feel that all the characters were
written so poorly (and thin) that none of them could ever really connect to each other on any level during the film. (Except for Bateman &amp; Page).
Basically, they're all caricatures and in the end your left seeing Juno grow up, leading you to one resounding thought: "So what, big deal". Overall, I think this comedy was caught trying to be more serious than it's "witty" script could handle. Juno is a nice little film but hardly worth all the praise heaped upon it. Little
Miss Sunshine definitely contains better comedic moments, deeper characters and more heart than Juno can ever muster. (3.25 stars)

What I can say is that if you want to leave your mind at the door (seriously, Milla's boyfriend Anderson couldn't write an original story if his life depended on it) and watch Milla kick some serious butt, then this film is for you. The fight scenes are pretty "bloody" nice, the director Mulcahy (Highlander) making full use of Milla's excellent knife handling skills (not that she really has any acting skills). Supporting characters: Heroes Ali Larter and singer Ashanti are adequate, but nothing to write home about. All in all this is a quick moving, action packed, REALLY simple story but the ending still satisfies, unlike RE Apocalypse. So, if your in the mood for some nice zombie take down action, decent CGI, and a lot of soft filters used to make Milla's face even MORE gorgeous than usual... then this is your baby! I really like all the actors involved (Hauer, Neil, Short, Richardson) and they did the best they could considering the scripts predictability, but the script and production design fall short, leaving us with a low budget school play. The dialog is so wooden you could make a totem pole out of it. And the fighting scenes are fake beyond belief, except for the final fight between Arthur and his brother. What he doesn't deliver to us is a very deep story or fully developed characters. Basically, our four loosely developed FBI agents (stoic Foxx, pretty Garner, comic Bateman, veteran Cooper) go on a stupendously boring hunt for the head of a terrorist group. What irks me is that by the time they even make it into Saudi Arabia we haven't learned anything interesting about the lead characters. Also, once in "The Kingdom" we learn nothing about the terrorists or their motivations. All in all this is just a run of the mill CSI episode, with a talented cast and some wonderful action scenes. Next time, get a real script instead of characters pulling lame clues out of a bomb crater (Hey, look! a detonator! I wonder were that came from?). This two hour episode is well made and has some great acting in it (Forbes, Olmos, Jacobsen). Its actually better than last season's episodes so I'm rating it 3.5 stars. This redemption based episode held my attention, for the most part, but it unfortunately focuses on two characters that aren't deeply intricate to the overall BSG storyline. As a result of this and the CONSTANT USE of FLASHBACKS this episode is filled with back story and not much else. Exposition we do learn, in about ten seconds, is a main character spoiler and a bit of cylon evolution, seeing some modified original-styled cylons in action. I guess my main beef with this episode and the show is how come our respected "Colonial Officers" always draw their weapons on their friends, family and civilians? Seriously, these characters don't represent integrity and honor in ANY type of military fashion, they're discipline is horrible and in the end they're more like a rogue group of fascist vigilantes. Would you want these people in a military protecting you and your family? I think not.

In Rescue Dawn we follow pilot Dengler, played by Bale, as he attempts to escape from a Laos POW camp. Bale does a nice job but his co-stars really outshine him in this outing (Davies, Zahn, Jusakul, Chunsuttiwat). Shot with wide lenses you feel like you’re in the jungle right alongside these men. With a smooth “in your face” style of elegance this film will make you feel how inhospitable and uncomfortable the jungle can really be. You see the both the beauty of the land and feel the intense physical and mental harshness it exudes. Although simple in premise, this film shows you the willpower of one man and his fight for survival in a deadly-beautiful world. Rescue Dawn is slow paced and well made, has a tacky ending, but still takes you on a fairly profound journey if you’re open to it (3.75 stars).

The main reason for this is that I couldn't find any characters to root for! (even though Crowe, Brolin, and Ruby do tremendous jobs). The story is slightly interesting but because the film's characters didn't engage me, it seemed like a glossy history channel documentary rather then a grounded character driven bio picture (Blow, Carlito's Way). In the end we learn that a smart man can literally ruin thousands of peoples lives because of his lust for power and greed and only get a handful of years in prison. All in all this film was well made (except for the boom mic work), had solid editing and performances, but the film's characters I could really care less about. Rent something else unless your a huge Denzel fan.

The unrated version has decent action sequences (the apartment) along with great stunt work (Cyril Raffaelli). The story is very uninspiring mainly due to a weak and underdeveloped villain who isn’t very compelling (Timothy Olyphant). Overall, this is a paint-by-the-numbers action film that was rushed into production (confirmed by Wiseman and Willis on the commentary track). Most of the film is Det. John McClane and Matthew Farrell in a car, trying to follow the tracks left by the “evil” Thomas Gabriel, nothing special there. Also, the daughter hostage subplot has been done so many times it’s become cliché. Although holding my attention, Die Hard 4 doesn’t fair well when compared to the original Die Hard or even Die Hard 2. With boring exposition scenes and weak secondary characters this one ranks the third best Die Hard only because its action scenes are far more realistic than Die Hard 3. A fun ride for sure, (3.5 stars) but just don’t expect too much.

I wouldn't call this an informative documentary, it's more of a visual "demo". It touches only ever so slightly on the origins of Iceland's early music history. It does however show a wonderfully edited display of some of Iceland's most creative artists. We get to see each band play almost an entire song live (Bjork has two). The chosen songs for the film are actually quite good, giving you a solid taste of each artist. From this film you'll learn that Icelanders are exceptionally talented at taking other forms of music, such as rap, rock, classical, electronic, and bringing the best out of them. The reason for this they point out seems to stem from the strong sense of 'family' in the Icelandic music scene. Another reason is they just go out and do it. It doesn't matter if you don't have any equipment or money; they believe that actions are stronger than words. (Icelanders are a tough breed indeed) The best reason for Iceland's creative music scene? Perhaps because Iceland only has a population of 300,000 and over 90 music schools! All in all this is a slick, stunning film showing some of Iceland's
most creative bands that will definitely send you running to the record store (scratch the record store, I meant to say iTunes).

Although the film is low budget (under a millionish, I think) it looks fairly good and adequately achieves a very dark, unnerving tone to it. A little drawn out in some parts by director Don Coscarelli, this film still has it; great actors, a solid score, and a decent script full of dark dark humor and an evil foe to fight. Not as good as Shaun of Dead or Army of Darkness but easily just as fun and absurd in that weird sort of way. Check this film out if your in need of "something different", unique and just plain odd (3.5 stars).

The tone was interestingly intimate and the cinematography pleasing odd, although I would imagine some D.P.'s are turning over in their graves. I can't fault its production values considering it was made for only $7000 but I can rag on the writer/director Shane Carruth a) because the film didn't make any sense after all is said and done b) his characters lacked any depth to them and c) his acting skills were lacking compared to co-star David Sullivan. A real nice first time effort but I wish he would have written a real story instead of a time traveling mess. I mean seriously, should it be "that" hard to figure out a story? When was the last time LAPD chased a fleeing suburban, with two black guys in it, drew their weapons and then just let them go? Answer: Freakin' NEVER! Hell, they wouldn't even do that for disabled people, they'd have them shackled up all over the place while they bust out the tasers. The directing, the sets and costumes were quite solid. Actors (Bridget Moynahan, Ethan Hawke) were fairly well cast. Cage did a nice job but Ian Holm was the best and most rounded character. The script was so-so and seems more like a hyper realistic story and dance than a grounded dramatic vision of a film, say like "Goodfellas" or "Blow". With this film it's characters are glossed over Hollywood style leaving you to not feel much when they are gone (via death or even just leaving).
Yuri, played by Cage, seems to care only about himself, leaving the other characters out in the cold. Was it written and directed by Andrew Niccol like this on purpose? Yes. But I think it would have made a better film if Yuri cared more, trying to hold his personal life and business together at the same time. In the end, does Yuri get whats coming to him? You'll have to check out this social commentary on gun runners to find out. It's a solid, well made dramatic film. Interesting, but not great-great as Ebert and others have made it out to be.

What's not like? Enough said. But usually, in a film, there is more to it than just an actress with a hot body (unless your watching porn). And that one thing I'm speaking of? A story.
This film's story is sooooo uterrly L-A-M-E! It's absolute dreck. There are crappy twists, no awesome shootouts, and no romance. So why is this film lame besides no story? S**t, the only reason I can think of is that Tony Scott is a hack. Sure, I liked Man on Fire and True Romance but he should seriously take a lesson from his brother (Sir Ridley) on how to pick a good script BEFORE HE STARTS filming. God, I wish I could have my two hours and sevens minutes back. Keira, you tricked me. Damn you. Damn you and your fine body to bounty hunter hell.

I loved the cinematography, and the actors (Farrell was good & the 14 year old Q'Orianka Kilcher was amazing) were spot on. But overall the story lost its way during the last 2/3's of the film. I connected with a few of the Indian characters but everyone else --man, this series was a serious chore to get through (12 hrs). I somehow think that someone should be able to come up with a decent "Americans Go West/Indian Mistreatment" film rather than a long, uninteresting piece of choppy fluff. In Casino Royale Daniel Craig is a more rough and tumble type Bond, like Sean Connery...plus there are no silly car chases through a freakin' ice castle to rescue Hally Berry. All and all a fairly realistic script [although a Bond film can never be completely realistic, its a Bond film after all] with a decent plot and some solid acting. A few problems I had with this film was the poker sequences, which went on too long, and the theme song, which was total crap. Otherwise, there hasn't been a Bond this good since Goldeneye, which was directed by guess who? The director of Casino Royale, Martin Campbell (3.75 stars). He’s the department’s top crime scene detective, and we really do see a lot of his face --well for one thing because that’s the only thing on his body that can move. Meanwhile, a heavily accented and troubled Angelina Jolie plays a fresh faced rookie patrol-chick who unwillingly gets to be Denzel’s eyes and ears at each grizzly crime scene.
Philip Noyce CAN direct great films (Rabbit Proof Fence and Quiet American) but he misses the mark with this one. The main reason is that when you can guess the killer twenty minutes into a film it’s usually a bit tedious to watch the rest. The only thing that saves this film is the particularly good actors doing there best with a mediocre script and the great mise en scčne created by Dean Semler (DP), Nigel Phelps (PD) and others.
All in all you get a somewhat scary, very predictable film, sprinkled with underused talented actors, that climaxes in a useless 120 second finale (talk about Deus Ex Machina). Do yourself a favor, go rent Seven again.

I mean it has some awesome cinematography, some kicking beats for the soundtrack and some impressive production design. What it doesn’t have is satisfying plot. The first fifteen minutes of the film are fairly useless, a woman named Anna Heymes trying to figure out why she can't remember her husband. The scenes really didn't make me care much for Anna, not to mention all the characters from those scenes (save one) are virtually a non factor to the film's resolution. Secondly, the psychiatrist's character that helps Anna was not needed at all; Anna could have found out all that information without the psychiatrist who was just a sympathetic sounding board. Next, due to the fifteen minutes of wasted filler at the film's start Jean Reno's character was brought in late to compliment the average acting and charisma by the head policeman played by Jocelyn Quivrin. Finally, the action scenes were few and far between making this film of 128 minutes a chore to finish. Like previous reviewers have stated, try renting these better flicks: the Crimson River films, Leon (aka The Professional), and La Femme Nikita.

Luis Guzman OUTSHINES his co-stars in just a supporting role while Jay Hernandez and Mario Van Pebbles do an adaquate job --the biggest flaw is Sean "Puffy" Combs who is especially HORRIBLE. Combs may look the part but during a bar scene where he deals with a punk he is an utter disappointment. He pauses after every few words during his 2-3 minute scene. He takes so many pauses you could drive a truck through them --absolutely amateurish. Additionally, the A and B plots are so divided in this film you might think your watching two DIFFERENT films. The romantic subplot is standard but just disappears outright halfway through the film where the main mafia-ganster plot then takes back over. All in all this is a B grade flick, barely worth watching. Stay away.

It weaves multiple plot lines
each episode, usually a women's home front issue and "The Unit's" mission abroad. It's great because both
women and men can find things to like as they watch together. Now, some people complain that "The Unit"
should cover more of the male action-adventure plot line over the female on base issues. I say that's not
the point of the show. Because if they did that you would probably end up with some half-assed psudeo "24"
or an even more boring "Over There" series. Overall this is a high caliber show; solid action, top actors
and interesting stories [based on Eric Haney's memoir "Inside Delta Force"]. I wish it could be darker and grittier like Mamet's and Ryan's normal projects, but still, there is no reason not to check The Unit out (lay off your American Idol crack for once).

Bana (and others; Ciarán Hinds, Geoffrey Rush and Daniel Craig who will be revitalizing Bond 21) do a fantastic job Bana is a troubled Mossad agent sent to extract revenge on those who planned the terrorism in Munich. The scene were Bana hears his daughter say "Da da" on the phone was breathtakingly amazing. Although a bit long this film is still engrossing. It feels like your in the 1970's with the use of muted tones and no corny costumes (bell bottoms etc..). Spielberg uses all his skills here to great effect to show how a country must fight to survive. If you don't think Munich is relavent today then you've definitely missed its point. There is a war going on this very day as I sit and write this review. People are being murdered, innocents being killed [on all sides]. War is a horrible destructive force and Bana's character must decide: How long can I kill for my country? And when does defending your country turn into pure revenge, savagery and murder? This is defintely a must see and one of last year's best. Sidebar: Granted, Spielberg may be Mr. Popular in Hollywood but he sure as hell takes chances with some of his films showing with great technical skill what subjects other self rightous directors dare not (Schindler's List , Amistad , Munich , Saving Private Ryan , "Band of Brothers" ).

This is the worst out of the Sniper series. The Bigfoot's costume is pretty neat, I'll give them that, but too many blur effects and wierd angled shots make this a chore to watch (at least in P&S on FX). The physical ability of the main character 'Ting', played by Tony Jaa, is phenomenal. Most of the stunts are said to have been done without wire work or CGI which is just plain amazing, especially since now a days anytime you see someone do a flip its with wires. If you look at the dvd extras you can see how good Jaa really is (he's a freakin Mary Lou Retton!). Your jaw will drop in astonishment at the things he can make his body do; he literally throws himself in the air, does a few flips, then lands like a cat and keeps on running. Jaa is beyond impressive. One example is when he does a double spin kick while his LEG'S ARE ON FIRE AND HITS A GUY SQUARE IN THE FACE. Amazing. As for the fighting scenes featuring Muay Thai fighting, they're pretty fun to watch as well. Not great, but good. Anyways, I haven't been this excited for a martial arts film since Jet Li's "Fist of Legend" but as with most martial art films the story here isn't the greatest but you don't watch martial art films for the story, now do ya? Anyways, so sit back and enjoy the real action from truly amazing and athletic actors. (To note: It is widely know that the stuntman in the Far East really do hit each during scenes, it's actually expected so all the hits you see the stuntman taking in the film are as real as real can get...check'em out in slow mo) Enjoy the action and laugh as needed at the whimsical story. In the end, "its all good".

But unfortunately the story isn't that interesting. I found it to be like a Kit Kat bar. You get excited that you're about to eat it. Its yummy, good and mouthwatering as you do eat it. Then afterwards your sort of depressed cause you only have one and that's all there was. The film looked really sweet, but with just good visuals and talented actors it just didn't do it for me. Tim Burton should seriously pick some better scripts don't get me started on Planet of the Apes and Batman Returns. Anyways, I think I'll rent the "real" Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971). Gene Wilder is way cool.

Selleck gives a great performance as aging Yankee MVP slugger Jack Elliott. I've seen a game in Tokyo and this film captures a lot of the essence of Japanese culture and baseball. They really do do things differently in Japan even though they seem ludicrous in the film; giving out stuffed animals for homeruns as well as chanting your name every-single-time your up to bat (wierd stuff). Selleck's character, Jack Elliott, had a huge apartment though, he must have been making some good money. All in all this film shows a lot of REAL Japanese culture, great actors (Badass "Black Rain" actor Ken Takakura, Aya Takanashi & Tom Selleck) and is truly an entertaining yet campy baseball flick. I'll leave you with my favorite line by Selleck.
Jack Eliot: I'm a World Series MVP!
Skip: That was four years ago, Jack. Last season, you hit .235.
Jack Eliot: LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!
Funny stuff. Recommended highly for baseball fans!

Great acting by Kurt Russell, he does a tremendous job as the coach. The rest of the team isn't that impressive but that's becuase the film focuses solely on Russell's character... *Awesome* hockey cinematography sequences along with *stellar* sound editing make this an all AMERICAN CLASSIC! Solid acting especially by Jake G.. Not too much war action for a film about a US Marine. Book was more anti-miltary then the film displayed (guess you don't want to lose any military assistance for the making of the film). At the end of the film your left with the feeling of what you might be left with after coming home from a real war, "Now what?". I'd stick with the book for a much more personal account of Swofford's experiences due to film's limitations of getting inside a character's head. For additional solid war RECOMMENDED flicks see my list entitled: High Caliber War Films.

Adding the cylon capablility of being able to be a human is a nice and sinister touch. It's not as lighthearted and campy as the original and by just making it darker in tone while changing characters sexes and glossing it over with jazzy effects doesn't seem too much of an improvement either.
That being said, the new series is even less impressive. After watching four episodes I've come to the conclusion that after the first episode it all goes down hill. It starts with changing Starbuck into a female character. I have no problems with that, its just the actress playing her isn't very impressive and it doesnt help that her character is written so boringly (Can anyone say Maverick in Top Gun?). Capt. Apollo is fairly intriguing, much like in the original, but on occasion you can hear his practiced American accent slip in the first few epidsodes, not enough to reveal his british accent, but sometimes enough to be distracting.
The effects and production design are slick nice although the ugly Galactica looks like a big old potato in my opinion. The battle sequences are fair. I would much rather see more one on one type dogfight scenes between a viper and a raider to give us a deeper sense of danger and excitement affecting the Galactica's characters. I find an entire battle sequence shown to us in a master shot of 20 vipers flying towards 100 raiders shooting lasers to be quite boring. On the strong side however there is Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell and James Callis; all quite excellent, each commanding attention when onscreen.
All in all an average remake attempt but due to its lack of new material (reshaping/copying of old stories) I believe it to be destined to last only two or three seasons max. I think I'll have buy the box set of the orignal series and take the new BSG off of my Tivo's season pass list.

I really liked the book of the same name but unfortunately author Salzman's acting is quite poor. His gung fu is good along with the outstanding martial art segments by Pan the "Iron Fist" but that doesn't save this film. The plot is thin and the characters are fairly one dimensional. Skip the film and read the book, you'll get more out of it (although they did show a majority of the interesting scenes from the book). Also of note is that the film is in P&amp;S not widescreen.

Bernardo Bertolucci is still the master, one shot gives birth to another as he uses long steady cam shots that aren't interrupted. With them you feel a tremendous intimacy, you feel as though the camera has wings. This film is lush yet simple, startling yet ordinary. It is hard to explain, but its cinematic truth that you don't find anywhere anymore. The story may not be the grandest, but that's not what this film is about. Its about the exploration of youth, the playing, how one must eventually stop the childness. Its also a dream for Bertolucci, how he remembers a time when cinema lovers of the sixties, how the likes of Godard and Truffaut fought against established values. If your a fan of real cinema and the new wave in Paris, then you'll probably enjoy this film (3.75 stars). If not, stay away.

It involves a math genius codebreaker (Dougray Scott) working to break the German's Enigma Coding machine at the legendary super secret country estate, Bletchley Park in Britian during WWII (i like a runon sentence now and again, sue me). Although a bit unexciting at times (very little action) the actors (intelligent Kate Winslet, smooth Jeremy Northam and the oh so captivating Saffron Burrows) keep you fairly riveted. One part murder mystery, one part break the code to save the allies, this film's structure is well constructed and will keep you in suspense till the end. All in all, Enigma is a solid film by Michael Apted and one worth viewing if you like espionage war films. A sidenote about the regular dvd edition that I watched: The audio levels were very uneven and the transfer was lacking (which was probably why they made a special edition, well that and to make even more money on the same product).

Vince Vaughn plays Pendelton 'Penny' Wise, a down on his luck phone hustler who's looking for his next big break. He does an excellent job and carries this character driven film to completion. Along for the ride is, the superb as always, Ed Harris who plays the bigtime money man while Julia Ormond provides some romantic subplot. I enjoyed following Vaughn's charater throughout the film but the ending left me a bit unsatisfied. All in all some great acting as well as an inside glimpse of the always interesting shyster world. Although the structure is a bit disjointed in terms of useless characters and fairly thin on plot I would still recommend this film based mainly on Vaughn's solid performance (one of his best to date) (3.25 stars).

On the plus side, Ron Perlman does a badass job playing Hellboy with sarcastic humor and all. All in all this film has some solid effects, entertaining action and some fun performaces by Hellboy and crew (John Hurt, Jeffrey Tambor, Doug Jones, Selma Blair's character was under utilized) but this average mess of a story takes a backseat to the wise-cracking Hellboy. A decent attempt by Guillermo del Toro but ultimately this is just eye candy like the recent Sin City.

Genreal Irwin played by Robert Redford, is delivered to a military prison run by warden Col. Winter (James Gandolfini). Immediately they form an adversarial relationship that drives the film's story. Will Redford revolt against the tyrannical warden who kills indiscriminately or just do his time like everyone else? The acting is quite good by the two leads, all things considered, but I was especially impressed by Mark Ruffalo who I had not really taken much notice of in past performances. What turns this film into slop is that it is not only overly long at 131 minutes but during the last hour, during a prison revolt, it slips into the most gawd awful unrealistic of situations; the inmates built a trebuchet in a matter of minutes and fling heavy stones through the warden's office window which overlooks the 'yard' or how about let's have a helicopter circle the yard with only one man in it sniping inmates with a shotgun? Both of those are pretty feasible and reasonable, don't you think? Redford gets many moments to shine (most likely why he took the movie in the 1st place) telling his "men" what it means to be a leader but overall this thing dries up shortly after it starts and turns into a big old lump of unrealist manure.

The Boondock Saints can be categorized as similar in style to Snatch or Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It has the same environmental seediness, dark humor and flamboyant characters. The one thing it doesn't have? A story. Let me put it this way: Two "religious" fraternal twins (played by the skillful Sean Patrick Flanery &amp; Norman Reedus) decide to start killing mob bosses and dirty scmbags. That's it. It ends there. There's not much else too it. Well, there is a gay FBI agent played way over the top by the brilliant Willem Dafoe and an aging hitman played by the talented Billy Connolly. But other than that, there isn't much to the film. The modern score sticks out like a sore thumb... Again, the actors are solid and entertaining and you can tell they had great fun making the film but writer-director Troy Duffy's story was just too weak for me. It may become some sort of cult classic someday, but it won't be because of its lame story. Oh, I just read they're making Boondock II: All Saints Day. How lovely.

The late, great Ted Demme (Blow, the hillarious & brillant "Action" TV Series , Beautiful Girls, Denis Leary: Lock 'N Load) directs while an unusually understated Denis Leary plays a boozin, eight ballin coke addict who's job as a small time car thief is in jeopardy by the local mob boss (played excellently by Colm Meaney). The script is short and sweet at 93 mins, it isn't terribly complex but there are plenty of great actors to gaze upon, each (Lenny Clarke, John Diehl, Famke Janssen, Billy Crudup,Martin Sheen, Jeanne Tripplehorn) contributing their share to this emotional, character piece. This is a somewhat intense, fairly gripping story with solid actors and performances (especially by Leary). Definitely worth a rental alongside the truly excellent State of Grace (Ed Harris, Gary Oldman & Sean Penn).

I love Massive Attack (I have 5 of their albums), but the videos on this disc aren't that great or awe inspiring. "Angel", "Sly" and "Protection" are probably the best vids. And even though I LOVE the song "Unfinished Sympathy" I hate to say that the video was quite boring --just the singer being followed by the camera while she walks down the street. I got a shock from "Be Thankful For What You Got", nobody told me a stripper goes down to full frontal. All in all some decent videos but nothing I'd right home about. If you a fan, check it out. Otherwise if you want to see the best videos you've ever seen in your life, check out Bjorks: Volumen. They're truly amazing.

If it says just "All is Full of Love" and then says contains two additional audio tracks "What do you think the disc is going to have on it?" A whole boatload collection of videos? Idiots. Let's rate something down because there was only four minutes of content on it even though its GREAT content and I would have known that if I would have BOTHERED to READ the description. (Who doesn't love the Tears for Fears anthem "Shout".) What the film didn't do after 133 minutes was explain what the f*ck happened. I'm still scratching my head after this one. I mean at least with Momento or Total Recall you could reconstruct events in your head and pretty much figure it all out. Here no freakin' way. Anyways, its a well made film but one I still have no clue what its about...maybe I'll have to watch the original, since I've never seen it before or if someone wants to divulge the film's secret meaning to me (without me having to join the secret fan club), please feel free.

... aka Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War is the Korean equivalent to Speilberg's "Saving Private Ryan". Directed and written by Je-gyu Kang, the action is fierce and explosive but isn't as tightly choreographed as an American built war epic. Dong-Kun Jang does an excellent job as the older brother turning his relationship between himself and his younger brother into a completely gripping and emotionally poginent story. Maybe I'm biased, but I love war films [Enemy at the Gates, SPR, Platoon, FMJ] with characters of depth that I can really root for. I hate to curse, (not really) but this emotionally deep war meldorama is truly some good sh*t. Highly Recommended!

The sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason was quite bad. Not a bad, bad. Just a not a very good good. With a script as weak as Ghandi's uppercut this film moves along at a meandering pace with no real direction. And when it does move it becomes quite contrived (smuggling cocaine in Thailand anyone?). I would expect more from talented writers such as Richard Curtis and Helen Fielding, among others. All things considered though, the acting was spot on. The delightful Renée Zellweger, cleavage and all, was effective as ever. The stoic Colin Firth and the preposterous Hugh Grant were both charming, especially in one of the film's funniest moments: a chaotic wrestling match in a water fountain. All in all, although funny at times, the writing could have given us more visable dilemas for Bridget to encounter or a strengthened, more pressing need for her to get married. In the end you need "reason" to truly like this silly film then again I quite enjoyed the scene where a quaint little kiss was given out by the delectable Jacinda Barrett. Go figure, eh?

Great acting as always by Washington. Scott does nicely, although why does he and his brother continue to use jarring visual photography to spice up there films? I just wanna smack'em both, tell'em to just 'tell the story' not mtv the freakin' thing to death! --sorry, back to the review. Dakota F. is awesome as the loveable Pita; good chemistry between her and Denzel. The majority of the supporting cast (Christopher Walken, Rachel Ticotin, Giancarlo Giannini) is solid as well. Marc Anthony is adequate as the father but during his climatic scene I believe he could have showed us a little deeper emotion. Also at times Radha Mitchell played the mother a bit too cold; more on the lifeless side. Although great as drama built action, it does run long at 146 minutes. I believe a lot of character development during the first 40 minutes of the film could have been deleted, as well as most of Walken's scenes (sorry chief), to improve the picture's overall slow pace. All in all a nice action packed drama worthy of a friday night rental (3.75 stars). Cheers!

Or maybe its just one of those 'girl' things that men just won't ever understand? That perhaps women feel quite insecure as adolescents thus having to attack each other to make oneself feel better? I don't know, but I do know that Mean Girls is filled with an extremely strong ensemble cast all the way through. That being said the story didn't move me too terribly. Sure I cared for Cady, the lead character, but ultimately I was left to say, "So what, people disrespect and degrade each other all the time. What else is new?". In conclusion, although It did tickle my funny bone on occasion, was well made and directed, I think that Mean Girls just didn't really 'mean' much too me. This movie doesn't live up to all its hype by its creators and critics. It was high school cliched, quite dull and boring at times. And finally, it really wasn't that funny. Translation: I'd take a pass on Mean Girls unless you want to score points with your wife or gf.

David Mamet keeps the pace going. Visually it could have been better, Mamet is no David Lean. The only extra is commentary by Kilmer where he states in a dry humor that Mamet is a "hack", jokingly of course, but he does go on to say that Mamet gets all his ideas from his daughter (and ridicules him often about various things; "cutting out all the good parts", "and how proud he is that in this film Mamet didn't have to rely on profanity", and the occasional HEAT adecdote... LOL...funny stuff). But by and far Spartan is an entertaining and tight thriller.

The actors are spot on: Denzel Washington and Will Patton are excellent, Donald Faison quite enjoyable (even though he seems a lot like his character on Scrubs; go figure), and Hayden Panettiere is ultra adorable as the coach's daughter. It maybe overly melodramatic but it still resonates with cinematic power the difficulties society has with racism. With a tight and poignant script by Gregory Allen Howard this film is a damn nice piece of work. Definetely worth a rental. Highly Recommended.

Julianne Moore pulls off depth along with an astounding accent while Judi Dench and Spacey were simply marvelous. The rest of the players were exquisite as well, each breathing depth and soul into their characters. Once you move away from the acting though you still have a meandering story, and although nicely layered and sprinkled with top rate precision dialogue it only keeps you fairly interested all the way through. This film is definitely more European in its story and direction, more emotional rather than structural like your usual American fair. This is a very skillfully made film written and directed by the supremely talented (i.e. badass) Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders, Empire, Body Heat, Big Chill, Silverado, Accidental Tourist). Sure, one can consider this film overly melodramtic at times but ultimately one that truely celebrates the spirit of hope in this sometimes depressing world. Fabulous actors put on command performances; Danny Glover is absolutely fantastic! in one of his best roles ever, Kevin Kline, Mary McDonnell, Mary-Louise Parker, Steve Martin, and Alfre Woodard do outstanding jobs as well. Although the story is a bit unconventional and disjointed, the highly theatrical and moving dialogue pushes the film forward quite nicely. Grand Canyon is quite a gem and although dated, still contains depth and meaning worthy of multiple viewings (3.75 stars).

With a plot as thin as thread and racist stereotypes galore!, this film is hit and miss with its comedic moments. The last 3rd of the film was probably the funniest. Surprisingly though, all the supporting characters had moments to shine, especially Dave Chappelle, Neil Patrick Harris and Chris Kattan. Oh, and Denise Richards was stunning as always (too bad she can't act herself out of a paper bag). All in all a decent comedy, perhaps worthy of a rental on a calm Sunday evening. Bend It Like Beckham is pretty cute. And I know, guys aren't suppose to say cute (it says not to in the handbook). But yeah, its not highly orignial but it is funny and cute...er rather the two leads are pretty damn cute. Its got a great supporting cast (Anupam Kher, Juliet Stevenson, Archie Panjabi) each character is grounded and not stereotypical. The acting is quite solid, Parminder Nagra does extremely well in her first film role after doing some british tv (see her weekly on the rapidily fading ER). Keira Knightley does well at well, looking oh so hot with her washboard stomach (the camera loves her and so do I). All in all a "cute" little chuckle about chasing your dreams as a teenager. Fun for the whole family. Recommended. Favorite Line: Stevenson to daughter Knightley about being a soccer playing tomboy: "There's a reason sporty spice doesn't have a fella."

James Muro. Duvall is oustanding as always and Costner, well he's just plain old Costner. Much like how Tom Cruise is always Tom Cruise and Keanu is always Keanu.
As for the story? It's quite a simple little yarn so I won't go into the details (I hate how most reviews tell the entire story with subplots and all before you go see it), but its just enough to keep ya'll interested in the characters lives. Of course I could have lived without the romantic subplot, but if you took that out the film wouldn't be anywhere near as good (not to throw stones at Ms. Bening, just boulders at the screenwriter for writing such crap dialogue). As for the action value, it doesnt have much of any until the very end. Then you see probably one of the most realistic western type shootouts ever on film. It unfolds with long shots coupled by natural cuts all enveloped by solid gold sound fx. All in all a decent western that takes its time with the lush landscape and somewhat dull characters, just how a western should.

Great production design by Wolf Kroeger of a burnt out wasteland of an earth. The special effects were top notch, extremely believeable along with nice photography by Adrian Biddle (Aliens, Princess Bride). Solid actors (Christian Bale, Izabella Scorupco) filled the frame along with a really interesting performance by Matthew McConaughey. All in all a slick action piece but ultimately doomed due to extremely weak characterizations. The only character you really seem to know, and not very well, is the lead Quinn Abercromby played by Bale. Worth a rental if you just want your fill of explosions reigning fire upon leanly written characters. It could have been a much more solid film if it had gone deeper with character development. Shame, shame, shame Mr. Bowman.

City of God is the Brazilian equivalent of "Goodfellas". Although the story meanders a bit between the ensemble cast and you never are drawn into it like you are by Henry Hill's character in Goodfellas's, the result is still an artistic and moving piece of drama. With rock solid acting by the lead Alexandre Rodrigues and great directing by KĂĄtia Lund and Fernando Meirelles this film is quite the nice piece of work. Definitely recommended, but Goodfellas still reigns supreme (3.75 stars).

Petersen does quite well in this film. I don't know why he didn't go on to do bigger and better film roles after this but I guess a hit tv show isn't too bad ; ). As for the film itself, the story moves along fairly well. For me its a toss up between Manhunter and Red Dragon but I think Manhunter might edge it out a bit due to the spot on acting by Tom Noonan playing an extremely spooky Francis Dollarhyde. Also, Joan Allen is great along with Brian Cox doing an admirable job as Lector. Sure he might not be as scary as Hopkins but look how much screen time he really had not much. Dante Spinotti does an awesome job as always framing and lighting. The music is good although sometimes dated. Interesting enough though is that songs with vocals in them were used on shots of Noonan to get us deeper into his mind as the character of Dollarhyde --worked quite well for me. A decent murder mystery, quite spooky, well acted and and visually impressive. What else would you expect from Mr. Mann?

But that doesn't really hinder him in his role as Vincent because he does not change one iota during the course of the film. He stays a merceiless, hard boiled, contract killer hired by a drug cartel through the films entirety. That being said, he does a solid job when his character doesn't have to show a wide range of emotion. As for Jamie Foxx, he never truly impressed me utill now. With skill he demensionalized his "in a rut" taxi driver character, Max, into a likeable loser. With Michael Mann at the helm he turns this simple story on tilt with his love for a stylized L.A. backdrop (shot all in HD no less) and a methodical, introspective approach to cinematography. All in all a nice character piece full of solid actors and a tight script of violence and psuedo-depth. Recommended more for dramatic film lovers or Micheal Mann aficionados.

Great actors got to show there stuff; Alfred Molina was absolutely outstanding as Dr. Oct while Tobey Maguire turned in another talented performace. The supporting cast was solid as well although James Franco bugs me for some odd reason. The script by Alvin Sargent and others is very tight, it moves nicely and weaves together the 3 plotlines quite well. All in all Sam Raimi inserted a friendly comic book vibe into this action packed piece of entertainment. Definitely check this out if your in need of a comic book action fix! Although slighty thin on plot this action film moves at a quick pace leaving you quite satisfied. All in all a fairly decent action film, but ultimately not as thick or intricately woven as the first. Decent work, worth a rental.

Not so much. Although quite fun and funny at times it doesn't have, I hate to use the word, "cuteness" that other films like Toy Story and Monster's Inc. have. Hell, it doesn't even have as many laughs. You don't really care for the characters as much because they don't have the flaws and weakness's that make you want to root for them to win! All in all it was good, pretty funny, but not great great.

That's not to say there weren't any great actors in it because there are. The whole cast is pretty damn amazing. All in all a decent film with great music and an oustanding cast. Oh well, one of the best and only reasons to watch Hard Rain is Morgan Freeman. Although the rest of the characters are poorly written and quite weak, Morgan excels in his slightly better wriiten part as the villian Jim, which I imagine is one of the only reasons he accepted the part in the first place. He's almost fun to watch as he leads his band of misfits, chasing Christian Slater and Minnie Driver about in the rising waters. All in all a quite predicatable plot that barely keeps its head above water. Like my grandma said when grandpa drove the new Lincoln Towncar into the creek, "Let him drown, but save the car." This time we don't even want the car.

Funny thing is, is that its not a super funny farce. It does however have an amazing! cast of individuals such as Oliver Platt, Alfred Molina, Lili Taylor, Tony Shalhoub, Billy Connolly among others. They did provide some laughs and great characterizations along the way but that coupled with a basic and unimportant storyline didn't really "float my boat". I must say though the editing and pacing were quite marvelous and even though I wasn't ultimately satisfied I did follow along with the action quite attentively. Although a cookie cutter action plot, the film moves along quite fast with outlandish characters and exotic locales leading the way. Zane does an admirable job as a likeable Phantom but why carry around two .45 caliber pistols if your not going to shoot your enemy dead? (You might as well have water pistols!) I can only take so much of shooting the weapons out of the bad guy's hands like you find in most cliched westerns. As for the supporting cast, one women really shines and it's sure not Kristy Swanson (No offense Kristy). You can tell she's movie star quality from frame one. Her name, if you've been living under a rockpile and haven't heard of her already is Catherine Zeta-Jones. If nothing else you can see what propelled her break out into the mainstream previous to The Mask of Zorro. Then you can let your kid brother tell you why putting a superhero like The Phantom they way they did onscreen is so utterly lame.

Although quite lax in the character department this film makes up for it in firepower. With some pacing problems and lame narrative scenes the only thing you'll end up wanting from this film is the balls to the walls action. Sheen's Lt. Hawkins is sooo gawd awful unrealistic, but if you can overlook the weak characterizations you'll see SEAL Ops (insertion techniques, weapons, TEAMs attitudes) that are quite realistic as written by Ex-Seal Team Six member Chuck Pfarrer (a lot of the same can be found in his solid memoir "Warrior Soul"). Sooo, if your down for some mindless action, this is your baby.

Overall this Linklater film is fairly good fun, its does however drag a little bit in the second act until the climax at the Battle of the Bands. All in all this is a nice PG evening rental even though this script was taylor made for Black leaving little room, except for Cuscak, for the children and other actors to display thier acting talents. If your a Jack Black fan this is one not to miss, his part is not as crudely written as in Orange County but his energy is pumping and he's on fire in almost every scene in the entire film! Truly astounding acting by Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts. They were so good I'm going to say it again...great acting. Sean Penn was outclassed in his performance by his co-stars; I found his character ragged and boring. The story in 21 Grams revolves around the three characters and an auto accident. It is interesting but the film's structure of jumping backwards to tell the story really pulled me out of this one. The disjointedness in the ordering of the scenes made watching the film a real chore. I think a film should be able to stand on its own without any use of fancy structure tricks, ala Pulp Fiction. I would have preferred a more conventional approach to the structure so I could really see the actors dynamically shine, moment to moment. How would you like it if I told a joke but started with the punchline first, then began the joke? Strong acting, complete but uninspiring story, and a shaken and stirred up narrative structure by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu keep this from being a really good film.

That's all fine and dandy but unfortunately there isn't much of a script either. To be honest, it wanders around like a three legged lama. It's got some funny moments but ultimately its a pretty thin and shallow story. As for the dvd's extra features? The deleted scenes are just throw away scenes and the commentary is quite dull. I give it 2 stars only because of the interesting characters portrayed by intriguing actors (especially Heder and the hilarious Ramirez).

The Last Samurai contains some truly astounding katana wielding action sequences (even by Tom Cruise!) sure to get your heart pumping. What leaves the heart rate flat is the lack of true depth written for and emoted by the characters (or could it just be Tom Cruise?). Due to this I am emotionally unenvovled in these characters lives, really not caring if they live of die. On top of that is the cookie cutter plot that has been thinly veiled over the fine sets and locations, the magnificent costumes and tremendous cinematography. All in all a nice action period piece but one that ultimately strives and fails, due to the lack of character development. Might be worth a rental.

I have to say I wasn't overly impressed. Uma, as always, has the smokin' bod and the acting chops but unfortunately the simple and boring story of seeking revenge on Bill is well just plain, simple and boring. Camera tricks, massive blood spoutin' fights scenes, and solid actors can't save this flick from being just well, average. Why average? Because I've seen it all before in movies from HK (Hong Kong) already! Just because you bring Chinese action to the U.S. doesn't mean your "King Sh*t!", hell it doesnt even make you original. So as I digress rent it if your in need of some over the top action (not that I don't like Woo Ping, cause I do), otherwise I'd check out some more authentic and "real" HK action flicks such as: Swordsman II, Fist of Legend, Full Contact or Police Story anyday of the week -----not a mish mash of genres into a stew of wandering 'pulp'. Jet Li has gained stronger film presence with age, helped even more when surrounded by the talented supporting cast of Tony Leung (Hard Boiled), Maggie Cheung (Police Story, Supercop), Donnie Yen (Iron Monkey, Dragon Inn) and the lovely Ziyi Zhang (Rush Hour 2, CTHD). The cinematography by Christopher Doyle is EXCELLENT when coupled with Dun Tan's rousing score. Although this Chinese fable is not as complex in story and character as the highly touted Wo Hu Cang Long (2000) aka "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", it still delivers plenty of thrills and action. Sidenote: If you don't like "Wire-Fu" then this film might not suit your tastes. I prefer the harder "Kung-Fu" style of fighting myself. It was barely romantic and wasn't very funny or even very enjoyable to watch. Such good actors; Cusack, Jones, Roberts, Azaria, Tucci and Arkin and why would they make this film? All I can come up with is that they all decided they wanted to work together. I wish the driector, Jan Sveråk, would have spent more time on the wandering script and less on the Spitfires which cost $10,000 an hour to rent (Not that I didn't like the dogfighting/flying scenes, because I did a lot). Recommendation? Ehhh... it's a decent film I suppose. I would give it 2.5 stars for the story and character depth, 4 stars for the truly fun and *amazing* action aerial footage.

Moves at a quick pace, fairly suspenseful with some added moments of unexpected humor. Acting is average by the lead David Naughton; all others are well cast and perform nicely including the beautiful, as always, Jenny Agutter of Logan's Run fame, Griffin Dunne & John Woodvine. Effects a little outdated ofcourse, but for that time period they're nicely done. Overall you can clearly see some excellent bits of true filmaking by John Landis. Also of note is some cool camera work by Robert Paynter during the chase sequences in the London Tube. A solid, semi-spooky horror film perfect for a late night with your snugglin' partner.

Not only does it have riveting action pieces it contains a story with a plot too! Nevertheless, Jude Law is wonderful as the famous Russian sniper Vassili Zaitsev. Also quite refreshing is the lovely Rachel Weisz, Vassili's love interest, and the villian sniper Maj. König played intensely to a tee by the talented Ed Harris (Check out his directing debut of Pollock.) Favorite parts are as follows: The first action scene were Jude engages the Nazi's is absolutely brillant! The love scene between Law and Weisz is so intense its almost overpowering. And the showdowns between Law and Harris are spot one. This is one terrific, action packed, World War II period piece. Highly recommended!

This movie is a comedic mess and drifted me to sleep more times then CSPAN television. I'm going to save both you and I some time by putting an end to this review right now: Mickey Blew. This is probably one of John Hughes's last good films, his prime might be over but what a prime it was (Mr. Mom , Vacation, Sixteen Candles , The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off)! As far as actors, John Candy has great chemistry with the entire cast while he plays the freaking funny as hell, over the top Uncle Buck Russell. An early Macaulay Culkin plays his nephew and virtually steals every scene that he's in. Other standouts include Jean Louisa Kelly & Gaby Hoffmann as Buck's nieces, Amy Madigan as the girlfriend, and the wacky neighbor Laurie Metcalf. This is a fairly tight script with no fat, one that moves well and has a laugh on every page. All in all this is a great family comedy, definitely worthy of a rental! Highly Recommended (4.5 stars).

After just recently having watched the original American Werewolf in London, I can say that this remake is one of the biggest loads of crap I've ever seen. The script was pure drivel and to devote anymore time to it is utterly useless. Actually, I'm going to give it 2 stars. One star for Julie Delpy and one star for Julie Bowen. Every man has a vice, right? Wait, I can't do that because this movie sucked sooooo bad. 1 star cause I can't give it zero.

I was given the assignment of watching this flick during film school a good five years ago when it came out. The reason? First time director John Bruno was coming to visit with Gale Anne Hurd (both of James Cameron fame) for some Q &amp; A. So you caught me, I didn't watch the film then but I did enjoy Mr. Bruno's comments about his first time directing. Although the script is heavy on action and extremely low on characterization courtesy of Chuck Pfarrer and Dennis Feldman, it moves along quite quickly. The effects were good although Bruno mentioned that he only had enough time and money to complete 70% of his vision and that the tiny flying robots didn't have wings because the studio wouldn't pony up the extra $15,000 needed for them. Personally I think the actors involved in the script are good (Donald Sutherland, Jamie Lee) but the script was so poor it didn't give them ANY room to display their talents. Sidenote: Before casting, Bruno was given a list of actresses seemed acceptable for the female lead by the studio. He saw that Jamie Lee Curtis was on the list whom he had previously worked with while doing special effects on True Lies. The studio had her on the list because she had proven box office results in foriegn countries. He called her up and asked her if she would like to be in an action film? She said that if she could be an action figure she would do it (She had never had one before). She got one and the rest is history. All in all Virus is an sub-average action/suspense flick with good effects, a nice effort by first time director Bruno, but ultimately a script that deems a trip to the doctor. (I've even read that Jamie Lee Curtis hated the film.)

If not, then I'd take a pass. All though the photograhy is good, it gets boring after a while even though Serra's music is solid, fluid and soulful (as always). I love Besson but this just gets a little too passe for my tastes.

Okay, you might be saying how can I give an old 80's film 5 stars? Well, first off the film is "loosely" based on Shakespeare's Hamlet. Second, after all these years its still freakin' hilarious!. I mean how can you not like two knobs who try to get free beer by putting a mouse in a bottle? Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas play the idiotic "hosers", Bob and Doug McKenzie, who spout classic one liners like no tomorrow. Don't miss this one you hoser, it's a beauty, eh? As with most TV shows, first seasons tend to be hit and miss. With Coupling's first six wacky, over the top episodes it's the same. The first episode "Flushed", which introduces all the great characters, doesn't get good untill the very end. But, all things considered, episode #2 "Size Matters", #3 "Sex, Death and Nudity" and #6 "The Cupboard of Patrick's Love" are pretty damn hilarious! Episodes #4 and #5 are just so-so. The following seasons, 2 and 3 are absolutely brillant, but this is still a good place to start. This UK comedy is sexy, completely ludicrous fun (3.75 stars).

Highly recommended if your into SpecOps documentaries (3.75 stars).
