Death Note

I watched the anime version first and loved it. Death Note - Desu nôto is a manga (Japanese comic) adaptation and yet it has a detective thriller more than it does a 'horror' movie. I was expecting this to be much darker than the anime and come off as asian horrors do. It really was almost identical to the anime version. Some characters changed a bit but some were word for word. I haven't seen the comic but now that I've loved the anime series and the first one of three of the live action I am certainly going to seek out more of death note. The next two movies and then the manga. This movie is not going to appeal perfectly to everyone. It has a definite very unique tone. A bit of throw back detective pulp, a bit of high school drama a lot of moral dilemma and it is a movie that is more about the story than it is any special effect. The story is sensational. Like the anime version it becomes a supernatural thriller, a battle of wits and journey into the nature of human. Light Yagami is an overachieving student headed to be a lawyer. Is he capable of handling the absolute power given in this notebook he found? Would anybody do better? Is his form of justice good for humanity if less than fair? Many thought provoking concepts arise. Also like the anime this starts slow and builds at a methodical pace. The detectives and the cyber supercop L circle Light the, tension builds. This was getting GREAT when No I need to wait for the next movie. =) good stuff especially if you like manga but don't expect a horror movie. Still highly recommended!
Seven Pounds

From the Previews I was expecting Pay it Forward meets Pursuit of Happiness. Will Smith quickly draws you in. Then there are a number of unexplained seemingly disconnected series of events. I really wanted to love the movie but 2/3 through I was getting pretty board. It was sweet but a bit drawn out. After it all comes together, after I cried at that point I realized I had been drawn back in and the 3* was easily rounded up to a four star. Rosario Dawson and Woody Harrelson were very solid. The concept is interesting just a bit fuzzy through certain spots. I hoped for a little more. It didn't reach the emotional level of the other two I mentioned but it is certainly worth watching! Recommended! Hope this is Helpful!

Marley & Me

Marley and Me is worth watching is you are a big sap like me who likes a good cry OR if you a dog fan. I have always liked dogs but never had one. NOW I WANT A DOG! =) This is a difficult movie because it has some charming moments a LOT of very real down to earth believable moments and a few too many dull spots through the center. HOWEVER a lot like Seven pounds this one made me cry a refreshing cleansing cry and for that it gets an extra star. The week link may have been Owen Wilson who is likable but not very moving. The HIGH point is the dog/dogs. Note: this is not a comedy. I didn't find chewing up furniture funny just real. Part of the problems and struggles that come with everyday life. There is a moral here that is phenomenal too. Looking back, even the bad days had value, and the rough times are worth the effort. My wife found the movie to sad. To real world and depressing. I argue she missed the point. The point is the happiness *in* the pain. But since we are split on it, I suspect viewers will be too. If your a dog lover or a find tearjerkers cleansing then check it out. If not, maybe pass on this sappy drama. It works for me. =) I hope this is Helpful!

Goal! 2: Living the Dream

Soccer fans and especially fans of the first one are going to have to see Goal! 2: Living the Dream. The thing many soccer films lack is spectacular shots of actual soccer and watching the footwork and amazing goals here is going to appeal to all fans of the sport. This movie tries hard to make the love story and the brother story work and it does for the most part. The big head effect was one all sports movie use with the rise fall and re-adjusting athlete. Knowing this is a middle movie in the trilogy some things were predictable but it is flashy fun and well filmed from the fast exiting shot on the filed to the Lamborghini racing through the streets. I would say this is particularly recommended for sports fans. And Highly recommended for soccer fans! Hope this is Helpful!

Grindhouse: Double Feature

PLANET TERROR: is an homage movie. It is a melding of two film-schools. The modern CGI techniques and the animatronics (puppet monsters) of the 70s. This movie is intentionally made to look like a low budget 70s exploitation film (a B-Movie), but if you look at the actually quality of the shots each frame is exactly what Robert Rodriguez was going for artistically, it is a masterpiece. It has the intentional film real scratches and holes and splices that you would see on a worn out real at the drive-in. It is actually used a an effect to get a more gritty creepy feel. This could be seen as a Modern-retro film making project. What is grindhouse? Exploitation films. What does that mean? Simply dirty and gritty sick for the sake of being dirty and gritty and sick. Yes, this is a gore fest. It really is not a scary movie. It is so over the top that there is plenty of humor in it as well. It truly is an absolute blast to watch. The dialog is campy and bad, the plot, well a bio-hazard create zombie/undead-like infected monsters and the survivors need to kill the infected before their brains become snack food. How do you kill these infected, in the most gruesome manner you think of. If it is cool and violent it will likely work to kill the monsters. Most of the time shooting them in the head is the way to go, because then they graphically explode. ha ha ha. It is an absolute riot. If you like the genre it is a must see, if you are not familiar with this genre of films you should check out something new and shake your head in shock, wondering *did they really do that?*!!! Hope this is Helpful!
